Spirituality in Hip-Hop

In Conversation with iAM13E: Wordsmith & Well-Being Facilitator
2

It’s been a busy couple of weeks up at Lucid HQ! On 1st May I went for 5 days camping in a beautiful valley in Wales for my third Sacred Sons Men’s Retreat. This one was particularly special as I was partaking in a threshold experience to celebrate the completion of my LT1 leadership training.

The weekend consisted of the sorts of experiences Sacred Sons are known for - connection, confrontation and communication. Although I’m familiar with the work included at these events, I’m always amazed at the things I experience and witness. The site where we stayed was run by a lovely off-grid community of people called Spirit Horse, who even had a sweat lodge and a wood-fired sauna that I used every day, followed by an ice-cold dip in a plunge pool at the bottom of a waterfall.

We sang, danced, laughed, cried, fought, hugged and made friends for life through the transformative experience of Men’s Circles. You can watch a video of some excerpts of the weekend below…

One of the great things about returning to Sacred Sons retreats is that it feels like a family reunion. We all live in different parts of the world, and although we communicate regularly through social media, there’s always a beautiful sense of reconnection whenever we see each other again in person.

One of the people I was most pleased to see was my friend Blaise, who is also known as iAM13E (pronounced “I am Be”), a wordsmith and well-being facilitator and one of the best rap freestylers I’ve heard.

During one of our circles on the last day, Blaise shared some tips on ‘integration’ (processing and applying everything we experienced on the retreat when we return home to our normal lives) and he spoke about the importance of channelling our creativity in that process. Some of the things he said were very similar to what I’d been speaking about in previous episodes, so I decided he would be the perfect first guest to get on my podcast.

In the interview, we talk about iAM13E's journey into the music industry and becoming a facilitator in well-being spaces, we discuss the Bristol music scene, the art of Freestyle Rap, the relationship creatives have with weed and alcohol, the spirituality of Hip-Hop and the impact that Men's Work and Sacred Sons have had on us both.
